The Price of Acceptance by Sarah Winifred Searle. Content warnings for: weight loss, eating disorders, fat shaming, and drug addiction. This was originally published by the Nib in February, but I only read it today when a friend retweeted it. I'm a fat girl and I've come to accept my body and my friends and family support me, but this still hit home in a lot of ways, particularly when I think of my younger self.

Best Anime 100 results revealed for NHK's Nippon Anime 100. These results were determined by an online poll that ran from January through to March, and it really shows in the rankings. I'm honestly surprised at how low Akira is on the list! (97?!) I'm not a big anime fan--I get intensely into a handful of series, but I tend to shy away from the 'big'/long-running ones--so I don't feel like I have any vested interest in the rankings. It's clearly based on popularity rather than quality.

Welcome to the Ballroom PV 4. I saw this yesterday and thought it was riding a little bit on Yuri!!! on Ice's coattails, which is fine, but what really took me back was the necks. I'm guessing it's a stylistic choice designed to emphasise the showy movements of ballroom dancing, but it looks uncomfortable.

I'm back at university and I was able to make some headway with my next assignment. My tutor helped me out a huge amount with my master's application by being able to signpost me towards the actual application, which is something that I've been struggling to find (the university website gives you the wrong directions!), and by talking through a couple of my research areas with me. I think I have a stronger idea of what I want to do, but I need to research it some more... once I've gotten the rest of these essays out of the way.

I wrote 1300+ words for my essay yesterday, so I'm hoping that I can finish it today!

And now, a meme.

Comment with one of my fandoms and I'll tell you:

1. the character I least understand
2. interactions I enjoyed the most
3. the character who scares me the most
4. the character who is mostly like me
5. hottest looks character
6. one thing I dislike about my fave character
7. one thing I like about my hated character
8. a quote or scene that haunts me
9. a character I wish died but didn’t
10. my ship that never sailed

Check out [community profile] byaro's guide to Making the Best of Dreamwidth.

On that note, what are some communities that you wish Dreamwidth had? They can be communities that exist and need a jolt of life, or they can be communities that need someone to create them.

I wish there was a community served entirely to posting memes/surveys (seeing as memes seems to be an almost exclusively RP term here), something like [community profile] thefridayfive, but more varied than five questions on a Friday. Little games or surveys that circulate through blogs--I have absolutely no idea how to find them on Dreamwidth and it's one of the things I miss from Livejournal.

Actually, having done a little search, I can see that there are... but most of them are dead! :(

Also, rec me whatever you've really enjoyed recently! I don't care what it is--it could be fanfiction for a fandom I'm not even, it could be a film recommendation, it could be a meme--I just want to hear about what you've been into! (If it's something like a TV show or a book, I can't promise that I'll be able to actually consume it any time soon, but I'll definitely check it out!)

I didn’t sleep well last night (from 6am until 3pm, I think?), so I’m probably not going to sleep well tonight, so here’s some recent media recommendations:

The Mermaid's Daughter )

The Adventure Zone! )

And it’s not really a recommendation, but I remember writing a review a couple of years ago about how I watched the first season of Grace and Frankie and I didn’t super love it but I did enjoy it. I think I felt the same way about season two, or at least liked it even less, but I watched season three and I think it’s finally hitting its stride. I could watch Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in almost anything, and it’s refreshing to see a comedy that’s so centric on an older generation and the problems they have therein (most of this season was based on them trying to market their vibrator for women of their own age). I think the more it moves away from the starting premise (their ex-husbands divorcing them in favour of coming out as gay and marrying one another) and the complicated feelings around that, the more it moves into being a funnier and more enjoyable show.

I recently heard someone describe it as being like “comfort food” and I can agree with that, at least.

University started again on Monday, so... I have a lot that I'd like to talk about, but I'm busy. I guess I'm just popping in to say that I'm alive, and I will make some sort of update soon.

Also! It rained a lot today. I got very wet. It was awful.

Couldn't sleep last night so I gave in and got up at 5am. As a result, I've had one of the most productive days I've had in a long time! I tidied my room (which was largely unpacking what was left of my bags from university and reorganizing my wardrobe) before my parents had even woken up... and then I've spent the rest of the day doing stuff like practicing my art and making some icons.

While I couldn't sleep, I checked out a couple of the new anime releases! Alongside Gatchman Crowds: Insight, I've picked up Gangsta. (which I've read before, otherwise I don't think I would have even bothered to look at the anime) and Rokka no Yuusha, which seems interesting.

I watched an arc of Kabuto as well, and it was the "shit just got real" episodes (i.e., episodes 31/32, in true rider tradition). Next episode has Renge and the first Hopper, so... I am excited to see how much weirder this already weird show can get.

YouTube keeps recommending me 1950s sci-fi B movies and similar movies. I saw one yesterday called The Killer Shrews, which might be my new favourite thing.

Went and bought a paddling pool today, only I think I might have jinxed the weather and now it's going to be cold and wet again. Ah, well. I doubt this will be the last hot day that we have this summer.

Mom helped me redye my roots today, so we can hopefully redo the blue bits later in the week.

I've been rewatching Arrested Development as background noise and I still think the show's very clever in its joke construction. On the other hand, Portia de Rossi's Australian accent is actually really noticeable. Like, I mean, maybe if you're not listening for it, but the moment that you do, you realise how Australian she sounds.

I spent about six hours last night trying to install an MMO that I used to play, Trickster Online. The game itself is no longer officially available for download, but there's a community offering client downloads, patches, and a hosted server, so... I felt like revisiting it. It's a lot easier than I remember it being, or at least to solo, but I am playing one of the power characters. I just wanted to punch things.

We've been having a heatwave in the UK this week and it's way too hot for me. It's way too hot for everyone, but I retain body heat too well and I get incredibly hot and really irritable in the summer. I can't win no matter what the season.

I've been watching more Sense8! I'm enjoying it a lot and I think my favourites are Lito, Nomi and Sun, but I like everyone. I find Will and Wolfgang to be the least interesting (and I think Wolfgang is my least favourite), but I like everyone well enough in their own way. Hernando, Daniella and Amanita are probably my favourite secondary characters. It's really nice to see a genre tv show that isn't about gay characters specifically (in the way that Queer as Folk or the L Word would be) but includes gay characters. Like... I am a queer person who loves genre fiction and who never sees myself represented often in genre fiction. It's pretty awesome.

Favourite bits so far include Lito experiencing Sun's period and not understanding what's going on, the cluster singalong to 4 Non-Blondes' What's Up? (perhaps now more popularly known as the HEYAYAYAYA song), and the psychic orgy. I watched episodes five and six together, so it was a double whammy of getting memed on and then getting psychic orgy'd. It was amazing.

I caught up on Kamen Rider Drive on Wednesday and I've almost caught up on Shuriken Sentai Ninninger. I enjoy Drive despite its occasional problems (such as: why does no one tell Kiriko what's going on), and I like Ninninger but it's so disappointingly average at times. Like, I know sentai reds tend to follow a mold but Takaharu feels really flat as a main character, and it's a bit frustrating he gets the focus so much when Kasumi and Fuuka are a lot more interesting.

Hung out with Amy on Wednesday and we talked a bit about writing and roleplaying. I got overwhelmed with my admin duties re: Pageturners and I'm a little scared to go back on it at the moment (yay, anxiety!) and it's been too hot to find a suitable writing environment... we were both bemoaning how we miss casual, relaxed roleplaying though. We both prefer the play-by-post forum format, but so many RP forums are just... not what we're looking for. She had a good idea though that I need to help her set up a little, so we'll see what comes of that.

I've heard the news about Fire Emblem: Fates as well, and I'm honestly less enthusiastic about this game the more I hear about it. I've heard defensive fans get really aggressive about defending the game and decrying a lot of the problematic stuff as just being optional, which is true, but it's still in the game and I still don't really want to play a game whose optional features (that net you bonuses in various ways) are really close to trashy eroge. Like, if I wanted to play that kinda game, I'd just download one. :|

I'm home for the summer. I moved back on Saturday! It was a bit of a weird experience, packing up my entire room and moving it back home. I've said before that university seemed to go very slowly for the first term and then went quite fast for the rest, but it truly felt like I'd only moved in five minutes ago when we were packing up.

I've got three mysterious bruises on my left knee, which I can only assume is from walking into something while I was packing up and then forgetting all about the incident.

I watched season three of Orange is the New Black on Thursday/Friday/Saturday! I liked the series quite a bit, much better than I liked season two, but it did feel a little bit meandering at times. It was a welcome relief to what felt like a much darker season two, although season three took a turn for the worse by around episode 10. We'll see where it goes, I guess. I might write a bigger post on it, but I'll do that later.

Been rereading Game of Thrones as well! I stopped watching the show after season two and the more I've heard and seen of it, the less I've been inclined to keep watching, but I've picked up the book again and I forgot how engrossing it is? It's well-written in so far that it does a pretty good job of keeping you interested, but that's a subjective opinion. I find it very engrossing to read, aha.

Speaking of writing, I wrote something myself! It's over here at [community profile] arlandria if you want to read it.

I'm moving out of my student accommodation on Saturday and I'm going home for the summer until September! It's a weird feeling knowing that my home for this year will no longer be mine, and that I'm never going to be in my friends' flats again after the summer. It will be nice being in our shared houses next year though.

I still haven't really packed my stuff up because I've been out with my friends the past three days, but I think I'm going to tackle some of it tonight.

My mom wants me to look for a part-time job over the summer and I think I'll try, but there's so little work going in my hometown that I doubt I'll be very successful. With that in mind, here's my tentative summer plans!

Hi everyone!

Amy and I reopened our writing forum, which may be of some interest to a few of you? We're called Pageturners and we're a pretty friendly bunch.

We're planning on hosting a Summerfest, as we've taken to calling it, throughout the month. We'll begin on June 12th and finish on July 10th. We've got a lot planned! Both my co-admin and myself wanted to get back into writing and found having a community helped, which is why we've reopened--if that sounds like something of use to you, we really hope you join! We used to be members (and staff, for a time) of an older forum that's since been shut down, but it was one of the most productive periods of our lives, and we'd love to make a similar place for others.

Summerfest graphic beneath the cut, because it's big. )

Semi-related, my creative (mostly writing, some mixes and icons) community is up at [community profile] arlandria, although there's not much posted at the moment.

I've been watching an anime lately called Show By Rock!! and it's really cute! It's based on a mobile rhythm game by Sanrio (the people who made Hello Kitty), and it's about a bunch of animal people playing music in bands together. The anime has a bit more of a plot than that and focuses on Plasmagica and SHINGANCRIMSONZ (the two "main" bands from the game, I guess?) primarily, but some of the other bands show up!

I caught up on it tonight--there's nine out of thirteen episodes released so far! I'm hoping on submitting at least two decks to [community profile] colors_tcg for Show By Rock!! as well... a Cyan and a Moa deck, if I can get enough images. I think it's part of May's POG to max out your deck donations, so if I manage to amass enough images, I'll link other people the images for submission too.

Other than that... Amy and I have been working a bit more on Pageturners, which is our writing forum that we're planning on reopening... tomorrow! Good news is I don't have to do a lot to reopen it, but we're trying to work out a month-long list of activities and challenges to start in a week's time, and we're... well, we're halfway there. We need to start scheduling and have a definite list so we know what we're doing and when.

I've also been replaying Final Fantasy VII today, after being discouraged on Tuesday (my game crashed and I lost a little bit of grinding progress). I've FINALLY gotten Beta from the Midgar Zolom and made it through the Mythril Mines. My entire party is between levels 20 and 22, and Cloud, Barret, Tifa and Aerith have their level 2-1 limit breaks--Aerith has level 3-1 as well, but I want to get Fury Brand before I move onto trying to get 3-2. All I need to do now is get Red XIII his level 2-1 limit break and then we can go Yuffie hunting in the forests of Junon.

And a little bit of a short welcome to everyone who's joined me since the weekend, because I realised I never properly introduced myself! I'm Kat, I'm 23 and I'm from the UK. My hometown is in the North East, but I'm attending university (for Film Studies) in the Midlands, so I guess I actually live there most of the year now. But I'm only back there for a week on Saturday and then I'm home again for the rest of the summer. I have two cats! I like a lot of things and my interests bounce around a lot, but I'm always into BBC's Merlin and I've been a big fan of tokusatsu for a while now, although university has meant I've only really been watching what's airing so far, and I'm still in the middle of Den-O and Kabuto... one day, I will finish these.

Hey! There's a Dreamwidth friending meme going on, which is where I've gained a couple of new readers from. *waves!*

I've also made a tentative creative (primarily writing, let's be real) comm for myself at [community profile] arlandria; I'm hoping that I'll stick to it and share some of my creative stuff. I need to get back into writing again because I find it a lot of fun and it helps.
chronikle: (ooo ☆ huh?)
It's been, like, five months since I last updated, so here goes.

I've finished my first year of university! We haven't been given our final grades back yet, but I'm pretty sure I passed with a 2:1 (I would loved to have gotten a first but I think my practical projects have dragged the mark down a bit). I'm back in my hometown but I'm not home for the summer officially--I'm going back a week today for another week, just to pack everything up, and then I'm coming home the following Saturday.

It's kind of sad because I've made a really good group of friends and I'm not going to get to see them a lot again until September! I haven't really been able to see most of them much the past few weeks because either everyone's been working or, in the case of one of my friends, broke his knee. :| (He's fine, other than the broken knee. It is a pretty funny story, we went out to party and then spent all night in the A&E.)

I saw Foo Fighters on Monday, which was the third time I've seen them and I think the best. They played a 25 song setlist (originally 30, but they ran out of time, I think) over the course of two and a half hours, and it was awesome.

Other than that, not a huge amount to report. I saw Avengers: Age of Ultron, Pitch Perfect 2, and Mad Max: Fury Road a couple of weeks ago and I enjoyed them all to varying degrees (although I have some issues with all of them), but Mad Max was my favourite by far. I've started watching Daredevil but I've been rewatching It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia for the past couple of days (because it's easy watching), and I've been playing a lot of the Sims 2 and Super Smash Bros. 4 (3DS).

I also read my first book in a day in the longest time last Sunday! It was Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Ship? and I liked it right up until the part where Deckard wanted to bone Rachael, and then I was kind of like "gdi" and the rest of the book just made me kinda sad. I've got China Mieville's Railsea to read as well, but I haven't cracked into it yet.
chronikle: ([bssm] c'est la vie)
Aha, I haven't forgotten about this place! I haven't had time to write an entry.

I don't have a huge amount to say about this year, other than it's been a weird one. A good three quarters of it when way too fast because I was waiting for university to come around, and then the last quarter has been quick but also kind of slow? I guess because I've been doing more.

So far I really like uni! I've made a good group of friends and I'm enjoying my course. I'm still good at essay writing, so that's a small relief. I've (hopefully, we're still waiting on some guarantors to sign for it I think) got a place to live in September with some of my friends. It's a bit of a mixed experience--I still have bad days and they hit pretty hard, but I've noticed that being at home for three weeks with not a lot to do has actually made me feel worse? So we'll see. I guess keeping busy is good for me.

I'm still not sure what I want to do with my life or my degree though. I keep thinking teaching but it'd be teaching about film specifically in higher education (college or university). So, I'm not sure.

I'm going to see Foo Fighters in May! I'm really excited.

I don't have any resolutions other than that I want to practice being kinder and stepping back from myself when I'm feeling negative. I would like to write some more but I say this every year. I'm thinking about doing one of those jars that you fill with good things. I might keep a journal or something. I'm not sure! We'll see what happens.

Anyway! I hope you all have a really good 2015, or at least one that's better than 2014!
chronikle: (kagepro ☆ alert!)
I haven't forgotten about Dreamwidth! Except I kind of did, I guess.

I'm going to university tomorrow--or today, actually, seeing as it's after midnight here. I should be sleeping because I have to be up at 7am, but I'm not.

I want to say that I'm feeling nervous but excited, and I guess that I am, but I feel kind of blank about it. I've packed my suitcases and I still don't quite feel like I'm moving out tomorrow. I feel like I have another day or something.

I'm a little bit worried about sleeping tonight--I have no doubt that I'm going to end up dreaming about missing going to university somehow.

So... I will (hopefully) update a little more once I've started uni. I enrol on Monday but my lessons aren't until next Monday.

It's also my birthday on Tuesday!
